My name is Marisa Lems, although my passport says it's Marjolein, but hey, what's in a name. Marisa is so much easier to pronounce, even for me! When I was 15, I changed my name and people have known me as Marisa ever since.
I am a Dutchie and I live near Den Haag - in Zoetermeer. I live with my daughter Maya and my 2 dogs, Toby and Rickie, who are both rescues from Romania.
I love dogs, all animals, actually. Ever since I was little, I have had an intense love for animals. Therefore, I do not want to eat them. I stopped eating animal products altogether, and I must say - vegan food is delicious!
I also love learning languages and living abroad, so after getting my bachelor of Education (BEd) in Utrecht, I moved to Paris and Spain. I learned French and perfected my Spanish.
Speaking the language in the country you are in, makes you one of the locals. It opens up so many doors to new worlds, and it changes your vision of the world.
Later on, I moved to London, where I found my vocation for life: teaching languages! I got my TEFL/ CELTA certificate and started teaching English as a Foreign Language in 1997.
After going back to my roots in 2001, I started teaching Dutch as a foreign language in Amsterdam, where I lived for 12 years.
Once I moved to Zoetermeer, many of my students wanted to continue working with me, and I started teaching them online.
In 2015, I established betterdutch. Since then, I have taken my online teaching to a completely different level. I use the latest technologies and approaches to make sure you get to learn and practise Dutch in a variety of enjoyable ways while working on all your language skills.
